As he was seated at courtside Tuesday at Times Union Center, moments after calling Siena's 59-53 victory over Northeastern as part of ESPN's college basketball marathon, Sean McDonough was beckoned by a few fans. One was wearing a Red Sox jacket. Another wanted to know about Syracuse basketball.

LSU assistant head coach Larry Porter is the front-runner to become the next University of Memphis football coach, and three others have entered a reshuffled picture. Josh Cribbs zipped around during Friday's practice as if nothing had happened earlier in the week. He was imobilized and carried off the field on a stretcher late Monday night in the Browns' 16-0 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Come Sunday against the Detroit Lions, Browns coach Eric Mangini said the Browns' kick returner/receiver is expected to play in each of his various roles as usual.

This is one of my favorite times of the sporting year. College football is getting into its most meaningful games, NFL teams are beginning to position themselves for the postseason, the college hoops season has begun — not to mention the NBA and NHL — and then, as a bonus, you get a big-time prizefight like the one Saturday night in Las Vegas featuring Manny Pacquiao, a once-in-a-lifetime fighter out of the Philippines. So with that in mind here are a few — strictly personal — awards from a great weekend of sports.

The NFL Players Association opposes commissioner Roger Goodell's call for players to tell their teams' medical staffs if they think a teammate shows symptoms of a concussion, saying that is not an adequate solution. "If every player were a medical doctor that could recognize symptoms of concussions, then that would be a great idea," NFLPA assistant executive director George Atallah said in a telephone interview Friday. With a noon start for Sunday's home game against Washington, Cowboys receiver Roy Williams will return to using a visor on his helmet. An embarrassing episode during last Sunday's loss at Green Bay convinced Williams to stop using the visor at night. Williams said he lost a throw from quarterback Tony Romo during the third quarter in the lights, and the football hit the protective bars of his helmet.

Nate Burleson has sustained about a half-dozen concussions since he has been in the NFL. At least he believes so. "After your head hits the ground, you don't always remember what's happened," the Seattle Seahawks ' veteran wide receiver said Friday.
